A 27-year-old man from Atlantic County was sentenced to five years in New Jersey state prison for luring a girl for sex — who actually was an undercover detective, authorities said. Richard Hoffman, of Mays Landing, was sentenced on Friday, July 8, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer. The charge was in connection with a series of events that occurred in Toms River in September 2018, Billhimer said. A 39-year-old woman from Pleasantville is accused of causing a South Toms River man's drug overdose death, authorities said. On June 21, Michele Baker was charged with strict liability drug-induced death, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer. A South Jersey man who was shot by police last month has been charged with several weapons offenses, authorities said. Jalial Whitted, 37 of Absecon was charged in connection with a May 24 standoff with police in the 700 block of New Road in Absecon, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office. An 18-year-old boy died and his 17-year-old sister was rescued when sand collapsed in on them while they were digging at a New Jersey beach Tuesday, May 17, authorities said. Levy Caverley, of Maine, was identified as the victim by Toms River police.
