London Sophia DeShields, of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, 15, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024. Born in Voorhees, New Jersey to David A. and Lauren A. (nee Chatzidakis), London was about to begin her sophomore year of Lenape High School. She was an excellent student who was a favorite with all of her teachers. An accomplished athlete in her own right, London started as a gymnast and finished second in the country during her last season competing. For Sebastian Rivera of Toms River, the only thing that tastes as sweet as an Olympic medal might be donuts from a hometown shop. The former Rutgers University wrestler won a bronze medal representing Puerto Rico at the 2024 Summer Olympics. He was back in Toms River less than two days after his final match in Paris to pick up some treats at Ob-Co's Donuts. New Jersey hurdler Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is cruising right to the gold. The Dunellen native is ten hurdles and one lap around the track from potentially achieving a very rare Olympic feat. McLaughlin-Levrone, who turned 25 on Wednesday, Aug. 7, coasted into the finals of the track and field women's 400-meter hurdles at Paris 2024, dominating her semifinal race on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Former Sprinter Killed In Crash 'Left A Lasting Footprint' On South Jersey HS Track Team
Friends and former teammates were remembering a Mays Landing teen who died after crashing his motorcycle, according to a fundraising campaign. A GoFundMe page was created for 19-year-old Jeremiah St. Surin after he was killed in the crash at around 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 1. Egg Harbor Township police said St. Surin's motorcycle struck a Ford Explorer at the intersection of West Jersey Avenue and Cates Road. "A-M-A-Z-I-N-G" is how Timber Creek Regional High School described Shawn McHugh. The popular special education teacher and track coach died on Thursday, Jan. 18 of injuries suffered in a two-car crash in Deptford weeks prior. "Mr. McHugh was a Teacher, a Coach, a Friend and an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G part of our Timber Creek Community," the high school said on Facebook. Juanita Lynn Kato died on Jan. 3 at the age of 46, according to an obituary published by May Funeral Home. She was a basketball star at Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden where she was born and raised, her obituary said. "Her passion was sports" and she also was a member of the high school track and field team, the obit said, adding she graduated and earned a college scholarship in basketball. Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal Somerset County crash as a 23-year-old high school graduate and track star. Mario Heslop, of New Brunswick, was behind the wheel of a 2013 Infiniti Q50S heading eastbound in the left lane of Hamilton Street when he crossed the centerline around 5:30 p.m. in Franklin Township on Monday, June 19, Somerset County Prosecutor John P. A 25-year-old New Jersey track star was shot and killed while behind the wheel of a vehicle Monday, Oct. 10, authorities said. Daveigh Brooks, of Ewing, was found having suffered gunshot wounds in the driver's seat of a black Ford fusion parked in the middle of Greeley Alley in Trenton around 9:25 p.m., Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Alysha Menzies "always had a song in her head and her heart," a loved one wrote in tribute as word spread that the music tragically and unexpectedly had stopped. Menzies, 27, of Garfield, was driving a sedan that apparently slammed into the back of a flatbed tow truck on westbound Route 3 near Route 120 in East Rutherford shortly after 4 a.m. Friday, May 6, responders said. A 61-year-old track coach from Jersey City has been arrested on accusations he sexually assaulted a girl at a track meet in Ocean County, authorities said. Thomas Downes was at the John Bennet Athletic Bubble in Toms River when he "inappropriately touched" a minor female athlete participating in the meet on Saturday, Feb. 12, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D.
