TRIBUTE: Portuguese Americans in Newark's Ironbound are reeling from the death of a beloved community police officer who devoted a great deal of his life to helping children. Elmwood Park Man, 59, Found Dead Outside By Suicide With Gun
A 59-year-old Elmwood Park man died by suicide on a borough street Thursday morning, authorities confirmed. The man's body was found outside on Parkview Avenue near the intersection of Willow Street around 10:30 a.m. Oct. 27, Elmwood Park Police Chief Michael Foligno said. He was pronounced dead at the scene and turned over to the Bergen County Medical Examiner's Office, the chief said. Police also recovered a .45-caliber handgun and were notifying next of kin. Driver Fatally Shoots Himself On Garden State Parkway: State Police
A driver fatally shot himself in a vehicle on the Garden State Parkway overnight, authorities said. State troopers patrolling the highway found a vehicle on the right shoulder at milepost 139 in Cranford around 3:30 a.m., New Jersey State Police Trooper Charles Marchan said. Upon approaching the vehicle, troopers saw a deceased man with one self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head, Marchan said. The incident remains under investigation and there was no additional information available.

Jumper Takes Fatal Leap From Central Jersey Bridge
A man leapt to his death from a bridge in Edison Township Monday, Sept. 26, authorities confirmed. At approximately 2:45 p.m., the unidentified man jumped from the Morris Goodkind Bridge, according to Deputy Chief Robert Dudash Jr. He landed in the wooded area near Marina Drive in Edison, the deputy chief said. Police responding to a stabbing in Englewood were involved in a fatal shooting, according to multiple sources. CPR was in progress as a shooting victim was taken to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in grave condition with a gunshot wound in the chest following the incident on West Englewood Avenue off the corner of Reade Street shortly before 8:30 a.m. Saturday, they said. A New Jersey woman was found dead on her front lawn, and her husband dead inside, in what police say was a murder suicide. James Jasper, 66, of Fords, is believed to have shot his wife, Lynn Jasper, 69 of Fords, before turning the gun on himself at a house on Soren Street in Woodbridge Wednesday, Aug. 31, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone said. UPDATE: A Ridgefield Park man arrested on child sex assault charges hanged himself in his Bergen County Jail cell, Sheriff Anthony Cureton confirmed Thursday. Jose P. An apparent murder-suicide is being investigated in Cape May County, authorities said. Thursday morning, July 21, the Middle Township police responded to a residence on West Atlantic Avenue to check the well being of the occupants. UPDATED: A 60-year-old woman jumped off the parking garage at Harrah's Casino, authorities said. The woman, whose name was not released, was from Rio Grande. The jumper was found dead at 777 Harrah's Boulevard in Atlantic City, initial reports said. The incident occurred at about 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, police said.
