New Jersey hospitals are among the safest in the nation, according to the fall 2024 Hospital Safety Grade report from The Leapfrog Group. The Garden State ranks in the top 10 states for the highest percentage of "A" hospitals, joining states like Utah, Virginia, and Connecticut. The grades, which are updated twice a year, assess nearly 3,000 hospitals across the country on their effectiveness at preventing medical errors, accidents, and infections. A scratch-off lottery ticket worth $4 million was purchased at a convenience store in Salem County, officials said. The 200X Cash Blitz scratch-off was sold at the Sunoco Food Mart on Chestnut Street in Elmer, the New Jersey Lottery said in a news release on Monday, Oct. 28. A Franklin Township woman died a few days after she was struck while crossing a road in Malaga, authorities said. Elishama Louis, 20, died from her injuries on Monday, Oct. 14, the Franklin Township Police Department said in a news release. An 81-year-old woman from Salem County was killed in a collision with a tractor-trailer, authorities said. The crash occurred at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16 in the intersection of Route 40 and Route 677 in Upper Pittsgrove, according to New Jersey State Police. A 30-year-old man from South Jersey has been charged with drunk driving in connection with a December crash that killed a beloved mom of four, NJ Advance Media reported. Stephen M. Karwowski, of Elmer was driving a pickup in Pennsville on Dec. 4, 2021, when he struck a car driven by Genita Townsend, 52, the outlet said.
