Judith Fox-Hernandez, 58, died from her injuries, the Aberdeen Township Police Department said in a news release on Wednesday, Oct. 2. She was hit near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Second Street at around 7:24 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
Officers found Fox-Hernandez in the road and she was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. She was pronounced dead at the Neptune hospital on Sunday, Sept. 29.
A GoFundMe page said Fox-Hernandez was the victim of a hit-and-run who was struck while jogging.
"Due to the severity, Judi was airlifted to the nearest trauma center where her husband, two daughters, and extended family waited anxiously to hear if she would make it through the night," wrote Alissa Winkler, the fundraiser's organizer. "This was the beginning of multiple excruciating weeks, hoping and praying for Judi's recovery, which ended, devastatingly, with her passing."
The GoFundMe had raised more than $3,200 from at least 36 donations as of press time.
Fox-Hernandez was born in Brooklyn, New York, on Monday, Oct. 4, 1965, according to her obituary from Marine Park Funeral Home. The woman who was the youngest of nine siblings worked as a flight attendant.
Fox-Hernandez was remembered for her passion for travel and live music.
"Judi could often be found dancing joyfully at concerts, her bright aura shining through the crowd," Fox-Hernandez's obituary read. "Her generous free spirit touched the lives of so many, and she will be deeply missed."
Chrissie Hynde, lead singer of The Pretenders, posted an Instagram tribute to Fox-Hernandez, calling her the British rock band's "number one fan" with "smiling enthusiasm" in the front row at concerts.
"Judi cheered us on unfailingly during every show of the last few years," Hynde wrote. "We will miss her."
Fellow fans of The Pretenders also offered their condolences.
"This is actually so horrible😭," one Instagram commenter said. "Judi was the kindest person I have ever met and the biggest fan of you guys in the whole world. I remember hanging out with her in the pit when you opened up for [Guns N' Roses] last year at MetLife Stadium."
"This is so heartbreaking," another person commented. "I took a couple photos of her whenever The Pretenders opened for the Foo Fighters in July at Citi Field. Would love to somehow send them to her family/the band. She seemed like such a kindhearted lady and definitely had a beautiful light about her 💔."
Fox-Hernandez was also remembered for her love of animals.
"Judi embraced a vegan lifestyle, passionately advocating for the well-being of all creatures," her obituary said. "She was a bold and independent woman, instilling these values in her two daughters and raising them to be as fierce and compassionate as she was."
A wake will be held for Fox-Hernandez at the funeral home on Quentin Road in Brooklyn from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3. A committal service will immediately follow at Green-Wood Crematory on 25th Street.
