In a 62-38 percent vote on Tuesday, Nov. 5, a proposal was passed to permit "plenary retail consumption licenses" in Haddon Heights, according to unofficial results. The Philadelphia suburb incorporated in 1904 has no liquor stores or bars.
Mayor Zachary Houck and the borough's council will have to create and pass an ordinance before alcohol licenses can start being issued.
"This process will involve consulting with professionals and experts, as well as the NJ Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control, and hosting a public discussion in the coming months to solicit thoughts from the residents and business owners here in our great community," the borough said in a message on its website. "This process will ensure that we take the time to weigh all factors and carefully craft an ordinance with both today and tomorrow in mind."
State law says that municipalities can get one retail liquor license for every 3,000 people.
There are an estimated 7,511 people living in Haddon Heights, according to a July 2023 estimate from the U.S. census.
