New Jersey's first amputee to serve as a K9 police officer got a special call-up to the majors. Officer Michael Braxton Jr. with the Atlantic City Police Department threw out the first pitch at the Philadelphia Phillies game against the Washington Nationals on Saturday, Aug. 17. He patrols Atlantic City with his K9 partner Ryker. Braxton's lower left leg was amputated after an off-duty motorcycle crash in 2013 and he recovered enough to return to the police force. The New York Yankees traded for Chicago Cubs pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. on Wednesday, July 31, sending infielder Ben Cowles and pitcher Jack Neely to the Windy City. A minor league pitcher from the Jersey Shore was suspended for a year for betting on Major League Baseball games, officials said. Barnegat native Jay Groome was among five players punished under MLB's sports betting rules and policies, the league said in a news release on Tuesday, June 4. Groome made three starts in the 2024 season for the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Funeral arrangements have been finalized for Rob Lafferty III, the victim of a weekend crash in Gloucester County. Lafferty's Kia Optima veered off the 3500 block of West Malaga Road into the oncoming lane of traffic before hitting a landscaping stone, several mailboxes and a tree before coming to rest in Franklin Township Saturday night, March 2, local police said.
