An overloaded power grid failed under the strain of freezing temperatures, knocking out power for more than 5,000 people in Whiting two days before Christmas, authorities said. Nearly 6,000 customers lost electricity on Monday, Dec. 23, and the vast majority were in Manchester Township. The outages began around 8 a.m. as daytime temperatures hovered at 23 degrees and plunged to the low teens overnight. Wildfire Spreads To 3,800 Acres In Ocean County
UPDATED: Residents in Ocean County were allowed to return to their homes after a wildfire was 60 percent contained Wednesday, April 12. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service made substantial progress in Manchester Township fighting the fire that destroyed 3,859 acres. The Jimmy’s Waterhole Fire had only been 10 percent contained as of 1:30 a.m., and 75 structures were threatened. That number dropped to 20 structures by noon Wednesday. An online threat and comments on social media prompted a school district on the Jersey Shore to cancel in-person classes Friday, But the threat of a gun, and subsequent rumors on the internet turned out to be unfounded, Manchester Township police said in a statement Friday.
