51-Year-Old Driver Dies 12 Days After South Jersey Crash: Police
A Sicklerville man died of his injuries 12 days after he was involved in a two-vehicle crash in Deptford Township, police said. Shawn McHugh, 51, crashed shortly after noon on Jan. 6 at the intersection of Delsea Drive and Fox Run Road, according to Deptford police Detective Sgt. Robert Jones. McHugh died on Jan. 18 at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, Jones said. The other driver, a 27-year-old Deptford man, was not injured. A bystander came to the aid of a South Jersey police officer who was put in a "guillotine" style chokehold by a disorderly mall patron he was trying to arrest over the weekend, authorities said. Michael Carberry was harassing shoppers at the Deptford Mall around 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 19, bringing police to the scene, Deptford Police Chief Joe Smith said. Funeral Services Announced For Slain South Jersey Police Officer
Funeral services were announced for Deptford Police Officer Robert J. “Bobby” Shisler, 27, who died Sunday, May.7 as a result of a gunshot wound in March. Shisler’s service is scheduled for noon on May 17 at Rowan University’s Pfleeger Concert Hall in Glassboro. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a pass and reflection from 9 a.m. to noon that day at the same hall at 201 Mullica Hill Road. The burial is private. The New Jersey Attorney General's Office is investigating a police-involved shooting that left one man dead in South Jersey over the weekend. Deptford police responded to a Fox Run Road home for an undisclosed reason after a 9-1-1 call around 1:20 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, NJ Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin said. A South Jersey police officer was cleared of official misconduct in a jury trial accusing him of using his badge to collect a friend's $200 debt, NJ Advance Media reported. However, Deptford Police Sgt. Rudy Ruiz, 41, could face a retrial of one of seven charges against him, the outlet said. The jury was stuck in a deadlock on a single charge of official misconduct. A motorist was critically hurt in a collision with a fire engine in South Jersey, according to developing and unconfirmed reports. The crash occurred at about 8 a.m. at Tanyard and Cattell Roads in Deptford, initial reports said. The car's occupant was taken to Cooper University Hospital.
