Colombian National Who Raped Pre-Teen While On Job In Bergen Gets 40 Years, Faces Deportation
A self-employed handyman was sentenced to 40 years in prison for raping a pre-teen while working at a Bergen County home. Jurors this past May convicted Alejandro Velasquez-Martinez, a 48-year-old Colombian national living in Morristown, of sexually assaulting the girl while doing tile repairs in her family’s home in Demarest the morning of August 19, 2019. Velasquez-Martinez was arrested a short time later in Demarest and has remained in the Bergen County Jail since then. His next stop isn’t certain. Two firefighters reportedly required medical attention after they were burned in an overnight blaze that ravaged what had once been a popular Christmastime destination in Bergen County. Deer Rescued From Demarest Storm Drain
It was a team effort as responders rescued a deer from a storm drain in Demarest. Police who responded to several calls summoned borough DPW workers and both Demarest and Haworth firefighters to County Road and Eastview Terrace shortly before 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4. The deer was safely removed and then examined by an animal control officer before being released.

Flames blew through the roof of a Norwood home near the Rockland County border. Firefighters battled extreme cold and slippery conditions to douse the upper-floor bedroom blaze, which broke out on Broadway just off Piermont Road around 2 a.m. Sunday.
