Jersey Shore Beach's Access Restricted As Erosion Exposes Century-Old Submerged Structure
An Atlantic County beach's access has been restricted after erosion exposed debris from a large structure about a century old, officials said. Access to Cove Beach is closed between Bay Court and Renaissance Cove because of "changing and unpredictable conditions," Brigantine's mayor said in a Facebook post on Thursday, Aug. 1. The city had previously put up signs warning beachgoers about submerged and hazardous conditions near the beach's erosion area. Changing tides and other erosion forces have revealed a large structure that was demolished and dumped in the water about 100 years ago. "W…

2024 Avalon Beach Sand Back Passing Project
A Cape May County borough has approved a plan to fix erosion-damaged parts of the beach in time for the summer. Avalon is expected to begin a sand back passing project on or around Monday, May 13, the borough said in a Facebook post on Tuesday, Apr. 30. Crews will move about 55,000 cubic yards of sand to beaches in Avalon's north end that suffered erosion during winter storms. Sand will be scraped from a "borrow area" between 32nd and 40th streets north. That sand will be placed on the beach between ninth and 15th streets north. Tenth through 12th streets north is considered an "erosional …

The Democratic governor and Republican mayor said they worked "through collaboration and bipartisan partnership" to find a temporary solution to erosion concerns in North Wildwood. State Denies Beach Erosion Prevention Plan For Jersey Shore City
A plan to protect beaches in one Cape May County city has been blocked by the state, officials said. The state Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) sent a letter to the City of North Wildwood denying an emergency request to build a beachfront bulkhead, the city announced on Thursday, Feb. 1. The proposal called for a 752-foot-long steel bulkhead from the middle of 12th and 13th avenues to 15th Avenue. The proposed bulkhead would be 12 feet tall and capped with boardwalk-style decking. "The absence of effective shore protection is expected to cause erosion to accelerate…

NJ Beach Town Forking Over $700K In Battle With Beach Erosion Caused By Storms
North Wildwood has begun $300,000 in emergency work to install a temporary sand dune, officials confirmed. The work follows $400,000 spent last month to install a steel bulkhead after damage by Tropical Storm Ophelia and Hurricane Ian, North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello said, noting the structure surrounds and protects beach patrol headquarters. Near the 15th Avenue section of the beach, a breach stretching about 150 feet wide leaves an open hole at high tide to homes and businesses. Work approved by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection will plug the hole with a t…
