Toms River police responded to the mall on Hooper Avenue at approximately 8:10 p.m., after receiving a report of a male victim with a gunshot wound, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said. At 1:22 p.m., the Essex County Sherriff's Office responded to South Mountain Reservation after a woman and her young daughter were trapped by bear in Locust Grove and could not exit, authorities said. As police attempted to lead the people out of the reservation, the bear re-appeared, authorities said. As police attempted to get the bear to return to the woods, the bear advanced upon them, and police were forced to shoot him, officers said.

Shots Fired Near Two Newark Schools: Police Gunshots were fired near Newark schools on the afternoon of Monday, May 20, authorities said. At 3:35 p.m., police responded to South 11th Street and South Orange Avenue on a report of shots fired, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. KIPP Rise Academy, a charter school for students from 5th grade to 8th grade, and West Side High School are located minutes from the shooting location.  Police did not locate any gunshot victims, Fragé said. The investigation is ongoing, Fragé said.
