A Newark man was arrested early Friday morning, Dec. 13, after crashing his vehicle into a sign and later ramming a police K9 vehicle in Maywood, police said. The incident unfolded around 1:07 a.m. when Maywood officer John Burns spotted a vehicle at the intersection of Maywood Avenue and Lenox Avenue with its driver, Florencio Hernandez-Rivera, asleep at the wheel, the department said. A 74-year-old North Bergen man was sentenced on Wednesday, Oct. 16, to 35 years in prison for fatally stabbing a man in 2021, authorities said. On Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2021, Augusto Perez stabbed Omar Cruz, a 64-year-old Albany, NY resident, to death behind the Ulta Beauty store in the Bergen Town Center mall in Maywood, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Muella said. Sean Sidle, a former St. Joseph's Regional High School athlete from Maywood, died on Monday, July 22. He was 19 years old. Firefighters made quick work of a Rochelle Park house blaze. The fire broke out on the second floor of Parkway home off Rochelle Avenue shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, June 16.
