The scale of a fast-moving foodborne illness threat is coming into sharper focus, and confirmed cases may show only part of the problem.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday, July 24, that a Cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce had expanded from five states to nine.
At least 1,947 illnesses and 98 hospitalizations have been reported. No deaths have been recorded.
Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania were added to Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.

Two employees of El Nopalito, a Mexican restaurant in Haddonfield, were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the restaurant announced.
"This morning, we were notified that two of our hardworking kitchen staff members were taken into custody by ICE agents, yesterday afternoon," the restaurant shared on social media on Tuesday, July 21. A 21-year-old woman who organized a pop-up party near Rowan University has been arrested, authorities announced Thursday, July 23.
At 11:03 p.m. on Friday, May 1, officers responded to 500 Whitney Avenue for a party that led to loud noise, parking issues, gridlock traffic and drivers driving carelessly through the neighborhood, Glassboro police said.
