Newark Appoints New Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda was named the City of Newark's Director of Public Safety on Tuesday, Nov. 12, following the resignation of Fritz Fragé, Mayor Ras Baraka announced. Baracka also named Sharonda Morris as the new police chief and Leonardo Carillo as the new deputy director of police operations. Miranda, a native of Newark, will oversee the City of Newark’s Police and Fire divisions, along with its Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and Preparedness. Body Of Missing North Arlington Man Recovered From Passaic River The search for a missing 65-year-old man came for a tragic end early this week. The body of Orlando Chamorro, who had been reported missing out of North Arlington on Friday, Aug. 2, was recovered from the Passaic River on Monday, Aug. 5, Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelley said. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force responded to Main Street and the Belleville Turnpike on reports of a body in the water that morning, where firefighters made the recovery, Fennelley said. Man Fatally Shot In Newark: Prosecutors A man was fatally shot in Newark on the evening of Tuesday, July 2, authorities said. At 9:30 p.m., police responded to the 200 block of Park Avenue and found an unresponsive male suffering from a gunshot wound, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, II and Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Frage said.  The man was transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:00 pm, Stephens and Frage said.
