Bridgewater Township officers responded to Ray Catena Infiniti at 1350 US-22 on Wednesday, Feb. 19, just before noon for a report of an injured employee, authorities said.
The employee had been working at the Infiniti Service Center when he attempted to pick up a can of brake cleaner near a receptacle filled with dirty, hot engine oil, police said. The can exploded, spraying the mechanic with hot engine oil and sparking a small fire, officials said.
A fire extinguisher was used to douse the flames before emergency personnel arrived, police said. The mechanic suffered burns and was treated at the scene before being transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, authorities said.
Further details on the employee's condition were not immediately available.
