A woman convicted of murdering a New Jersey State Trooper more than 50 years ago has died in Cuba, officials announced. On Friday, Sept. 26, the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Joanne Deborah Byron, widely known as Assata Shakur and Joanne Chesimard, died in Havana at age 78. Officials said her death was “a consequence of health ailments and her advanced age.” Chesimard was convicted in 1977 of first-degree murder and other charges after a shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike that left Trooper Werner Foerster dead and another trooper wounded. 'Compulsive' Sex Offender, Inmate Escapes During Transport To Hospital In Newark: State Police
The New Jersey State Police are asking for the public’s help in locating registered sex offender Nicholas Voutsas, who authorities said escaped from custody while being transported to University Hospital in Newark on Thursday, Jan. 30. Voutsas, 25, escaped from a New Jersey Department of Health medical transport van at approximately 9 a.m. while en route to the hospital, State Police said.
