A 31-year-old West New York man was charged with insurance fraud on Thursday, Aug. 8, after he altered an accident report in 2023 to make it look like he had insurance at the time of the crash, authorities said. Anthony Ayala purchased an insurance policy with Progressive Insurance on June 27, 2023 and then filed a claim alleging his Jeep Wrangler was involved in a single vehicle crash in Allamuchy, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. Body Found Floating In NJ River
Police recovered a body from a New Jersey river early Thursday, Aug. 8, authorities said. Marine Service Troopers were dispatched to the Raritan River and South River in East Brunswick around 7:40 a.m., where they found a man's body floating in the water, NJSP Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron said. No further information was provided. The incident remains under investigation.

Scooterist Killed In Route 280 Crash:

A 32-year-old man was killed when he was struck by a vehicle while riding a scooter on Route 280 in Newark on Sunday, Aug. 4, authorities aid. At 4:17 a.m., the man was operating an electric scooter on Route 280 East when he was struck by a Chrysler, Charles Marchan, a spokesman for the New Jersey State Police man. The man, whose name has not been identified pending next of kin notification, sustained fatal injuries, Marchan said. The crash remains under investigation, Marchan said.

Kayaker Who Drowned In NJ Lake Wasn't Wearing Life Preserver, Investigators Say
Authorities have identified the Old Bridge man who drowned when his kayak capsized in Jackson Township. Search and rescue divers found the body of 29-year-old John Pereira in Prospertown Lake on Sunday, Aug. 4, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said in a news release. He was first reported missing at around 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3. Witnesses told Jackson Township police that Pereira was not wearing a life preserver and they believed he drowned.
