A 9 p.m., Newark police responded to Raymond Boulevard by ramp/entrance to the bridge, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. The pedestrian was struck in the travel lanes of the roadway, despite a pedestrian sidewalk directly adjacent to the regular lanes of travel, authorities said.
The driver was traveling eastbound on Raymond Boulevard and said as he approached the bridge, he checked for traffic to his left and advanced forward when the roadway was clear, authorities said. He then felt his vehicle strike the victim and indicated that he did not observe the pedestrian in the roadway prior to moving, authorities said. The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene, authorities said.
The victim, who has not been identified was pronounced at University Hospital, authorities said. The investigation is ongoing, authorities said.
