Newark Traffic Control Officer Fatally Struck By Vehicle Driven By Sergeant (Update) UPDATE: The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has confirmed an off-duty Newark Police Sergeant was the person who fatally struck and killed Jairo Rodriguez. The sergeant was not named.  A 53-year-old Newark Traffic Control Officer was killed after being struck by a vehicle on the early morning of Thursday, Dec. 12, authorities said.
