NJ Newlyweds Were Killed In Crash Last Month, Now Driver Is Facing Additional Charges

An Atlantic City man has been charged in a crash that killed a husband and wife from Mays Landing last month, authorities said.

Levon Woods, 25, was charged with multiple counts of vehicular homicide following the crash on County Route 552 in Maurice River Township that killed Thomas Splinter and Nancy Orellana-Splinter Saturday, Feb. 22, Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae announced in a release on Saturday, March 29.

The crash occurred around 4:09 a.m. New Jersey State Police responded to the area near milepost 19.4 for reports of a head-on collision.

According to investigators, Woods was driving under the influence when he crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a car carrying 57-year-old Splinter and 29-year-old Orellana-Splinter, both of Mays Landing. Both were killed in the crash.

Woods, who lives on Atlantic Avenue in Atlantic City, surrendered to the State Police Port Norris Station on Wednesday, March 27, where he was processed and taken to the Cumberland County Jail, Webb-McRae said.

He is facing two counts each of second-degree vehicular homicide and third-degree strict liability vehicular homicide, along with second-degree violation of law intended to protect public health and safety.

A judge is expected to rule on the state’s motion to detain Woods pending trial at a hearing scheduled for Wednesday, April 2.

A GoFundMe was launched for Tom and Nancy's survivors, including her son Andrew.

"Nancy was a light in the community, always there to provide a helping hand with a smile on her face," reads the campaign launched by Tasruba Rhaman.

"She had recently gotten a promotion at work and was so excited to keep building her career. Tom also had gotten a promotion recently, and both were ready to keep making tremendous strides as a couple as they continued to support their family. Nancy leaves behind a son, Andrew, who Tom was a wonderful father figure to [him]. Tom himself was a loving father of three."
