An elderly Bergen County couple had $2.9 million stolen by a now-former Ridgewood Public Library tech administrator whom they'd hired to be a part-time assistant at their home, federal authorities said following his arrest.
Charles Gallo, 34, of Hawthorne, was responsible for managing the victims’ monthly bills, handling their banking and helping them with email and other issues involving technology after being hired in 2018, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger said.

Ridgefield Man Shot In Hawthorne, Local Resident Charged
A 32-year-old Ridgefield man was shot in Hawthorne over the weekend, said authorities who made an arrest.
The victim was treated at the scene and didn’t require further medical treatment following the 10:37 p.m. shooting on Wagner Place near Midland Avenue on Saturday, Sept. 16, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Hawthorne Police Chief James W. Knepper said.
Angel Alberto, 34, of Hawthorne, surrendered to Hawthorne police on Sunday, they said.

Route 208 Fatal: Dover Woman, 78, Killed, Husband, 80, Hospitalized In Horrific Crash (Update)
UPDATE: Authorities identified a driver killed in a horrific Labor Day crash on Route 208 as a 78-year-old woman from Dover and the injured passenger as her 80-year-old husband.
Carmen Traverso was pronounced dead at the scene, Hawthorne Police Capt. Robert King said Tuesday, Sept. 6.
Pablo Traverso, meanwhile, was taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, the captain said.

Driver, 22, Parked In Middle Of Road Found DWI With Illegal Gun, Magazine, Hawthorne Police Say
Hawthorne police checking out a car parked smack-dab in the middle of a street found its driver drunk and carrying a gun, authorities said.
The Maserati had been stopped in the middle of 4th Avenue so long that it was covered in snow when officers approached it, Detective Capt. Robert King said.
The driver, Terrel Stephen, 22, of Hawthorne smelled of alcohol, so he was removed from the vehicle, King said.
Inside the car the officers found a firearm with a high-capacity magazine, the captain added.

Stabbing Victim, 73, Staggers Into Hawthorne Police HQ, Accused Assailant Quickly Caught
A 73-year-old man staggered into Hawthorne police headquarters bleeding from a stab wound, authorities said.
As he was rushed to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, officers captured his accused assailant, borough resident Ryan Thompson, 44, about six blocks away.
The victim survived his wounds.
Thompson, meanwhile, was charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Hawthorne Police Chief James W. Knepper said in a joint announcement Thursday.
