A group of New York City con artists conspired to scam five Atlantic City casinos out of $1,120,000 by exchanging bogus bank checks for gaming chips, authorities said.
The Hard Rock casino rejected a check and the Golden Nugget permitted only incremental amounts, Acting New Jersey Attorney General Andrew J. Bruck said Thursday.
But Caesars, the Borgata and the Ocean Casino Resort all honored $284,000 checks, losing a combined total of $852,000, he said.

Pompton Lakes police captured a known ex-con and his female companion, both from town, moments after they robbed a local convenience store at knifepoint, authorities said.
Brian Tagliaferro, 32, robbed the Ringwood Avenue store around 4 p.m. Friday, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Pompton Lakes Police Chief Derek Clark said in a joint release.
It didn’t take long for Clark’s officers to find him and his alleged accomplice, Simone Greco, 29, in the area of Willard Street and Ackerman Place just off Ringwood Avenue, they said.

A Lyndhurst man admitted conspiring to steal $8.2 million worth of HIV medications from a New Jersey veterans hospital, federal authorities said Tuesday.
Wagner “Wanny” Checonolasco, 34, had an accomplice in Lisa M. Hoffman, 48, of Orange, who worked in the pharmacy of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in East Orange, Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig said.
Surveillance cameras helped show how Hoffman “placed large orders for HIV medication, purportedly on behalf of the VAMC,” then stole the excess once it was delivered, Honig said.

A former Bergen County resident now living in Connecticut admitted Wednesday that she embezzled $540,000 from a local company.
Melissa Corso, 50, and her husband lived in Closter when she worked for a Delaware-based security systems supplier with an office in Ridgefield Park, federal authorities said.
Corso, currently of Groton, CT, and co-worker Joseph Spaccavento steered customer payments owed to their former employer to a PayPal account registered to him and linked to her work email, according to an FBI complaint.

Fourteen people were indicted Monday in connection with the shooting of a New Jersey State Police detective who was investigating a trailer park home invasion.
Attempted murder and aggravated assault charges were returned by a state grand jury in Trenton against Najzeir “Naz” Hutchings 22, Kareen “Kai” Warner, 20, and ex-con Tremaine Hadden, 28, all of Bridgeton, state Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said.
