Two 19-year-old French foreign exchange students forced the evacuation of Northern Valley High School at Old Tappan on Monday, authorities said. Both men were detained by a school security officer after they were found walking the hallways while school was in session the afternoon of March 25, Old Tappan Police Chief Joseph Tracy said. A practice grenade found in the room of a retired World War II veteran at an assisted living facility in Cresskill on Thursday brought the Bergen County Bomb Squad. A Midwest woman who once set fire to garbage bins outside a middle school -- and then contacted authorities to confess -- was charged this week with threatening to blow up Ramsey police headquarters. Two members of a vehicle theft ring out of Essex County told Cresskill police that they weren’t familiar with the area but “knew there were good cars here” after they were captured, authorities said. A masked robber dressed all in black “like a ninja” attacked a Wallington gas station attendant Tuesday morning with a huge hammer, injuring him and fleeing with what was believed to be a few hundred dollars, authorities said.
