A 21-year-old ex-con from Paterson who’s already spent three years behind bars had been free all of four months when he shot someone, then shot someone else while police searched for him this week, authorities charged. A SWAT team led a raid that ended a brief standoff at an Essex Street apartment in Paterson with Memphis Morales on Friday, Jan. 12, they said. ‘John Doe’ Shot Dead In Paterson
Authorities were trying to identify a man shot dead on a Paterson street corner. The victim was shot in the head and arm at the intersection of North Main and Arch streets around 9:45 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, they said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Acting Paterson Police Chief Bert Ribeiro said. They classified it as a homicide – Paterson’s 22nd of the year -- but didn't say whether any suspects had been arrested or identified. The gun was recovered, police at the scene said.

Fire Tears Through Former Paterson Church
Flames shot through a former church overnight in Paterson. No injuries were reported in the three-alarm blaze, which broke out in the Greater Assembly Holy House of Prayer on Arch Street, off North 1st, shortly before 2:30 a.m. Firefighters were quickly forced to an exterior attack as flames blew through the roof. It took nearly four hours to knock down the main body of the blaze. Fire officials were investigating the cause. The church ceased operating in March. The building is for sale.

Boys Wounded In Paterson Drive-By
Two teenage boys were shot Tuesday night in Paterson, one in the arm and the other in the leg, responders said. Witnesses reported a dark-colored minivan fleeing toward Arch Street after the 11 p.m. shooting on Jefferson Street near North Main Street. A vehicle also was struck, they said. Both victims – one 15, the other 16 – were taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center with wounds that weren’t considered life-threatening, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. A pair of Paterson detectives working a new weapons-suppression detail subdued an ex-con who was carrying a semi-automatic pistol, adding to a growing total of guns they've removed from the Silk City streets, authorities said Tuesday.
