Newark Appoints New Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda was named the City of Newark's Director of Public Safety on Tuesday, Nov. 12, following the resignation of Fritz Fragé, Mayor Ras Baraka announced. Baracka also named Sharonda Morris as the new police chief and Leonardo Carillo as the new deputy director of police operations. Miranda, a native of Newark, will oversee the City of Newark’s Police and Fire divisions, along with its Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and Preparedness. Shots Fired In Newark, Two Firearms Recovered: Police Gunshots were fired in Newark on the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 14, authorities said. At 8:21 p.m., police responded to the 100 block of Clifton Avenue on a report of shots fired, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. While police did not locate any victims, they did recover two firearms in the immediate area, Fragé said. This incident remains under investigation, Fragé said.
