Assault Charges Remain Against Maplewood Principal
Columbia High School principal Frank Sanchez will still face charges of simple assault, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office announced. Nearly two weeks ago, an Essex County Grand Jury declined to indict Frank Sanchez on charges of endangering the welfare of a child on Thursday, June 13, authorities announced. Car Fire Shuts Route 280, DOT Says
A vehicle fire closed a portion of Route 280 Monday evening, June 24 in Essex County. Emergency response vehicles were at the scene in Orange as of 7:45 p.m. Two right lanes on the eastbound side just east of Exit 11 were closed.

NJ Homeless Shelter Killer Gets 22 Years, Prosecutor Says
A 33-year-old Newark man was sentenced to 22 years in prison after being found guilty of stabbing his roommate to death at a shelter in 2022, authorities said. In February 2022, Michael Wylie snuck a knife into the H.E.L.P. Center Shelter and stabbed Kevin Williams, his roommate, in the face, neck and heart, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, II said. Wylie was arrested while still in possession of the knife, Stephens said. Wylie was convicted in April of aggravated manslaughter and weapons charges, Stephens said.

TV Remote Fight Leads To Brain Bleed, NJ Man Convicted, Prosecutor Says
A 23-year-old East Orange man was recently convicted of aggravated assault after violently beating a woman over a remote control in 2023, authorities said. In April 2023, John Davis was staying in a woman's apartment when he assaulted her when she raised an issue over a TV remote control, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, II said. The woman suffered a broken eye socket and a brain bleed and was hospitalized for several days, Stephens said. Woman Whose 5-Year-Old Killed 4-Year-Old Convicted In Separate NJ Murder Case
A 30-year-old Newark woman whose 5-year-old son shot and killed his 4-year-old brother, has been convicted in the 2022 murder of a man, authorities said. Itiyanah Spruill was convicted of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the fatal shooting of Lance Sally, Jr. in Nov. 2022, following a two-week trial, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, II said. Spruill lured Sally to the location where he was shot by an unidentified individual and drove the vehicle used in the homicide, Stephens said. Aggressive Bear Shot At Essex County Park: Authorities
An aggressive bear was shot by police in an Essex County park on Monday, June 10, authorities said. At 1:22 p.m., the Essex County Sherriff's Office responded to South Mountain Reservation after a woman and her young daughter were trapped by bear in Locust Grove and could not exit, authorities said. As police attempted to lead the people out of the reservation, the bear re-appeared, authorities said. As police attempted to get the bear to return to the woods, the bear advanced upon them, and police were forced to shoot him, officers said.

A 36-year-old Newark man has been convicted of murder for a 2018 homicide in Newark after his initial conviction was reversed in 2022, authorities said. A 24-year-old East Orange man was arrested after he exposed his genitals at a park in Montclair on Thursday, May 30. A student at Glendale Middle School said while walking through Glenfield Park on her way to school, she saw a man on the stairs leading from the walking path to the wooded brook area, Montclair police said.
