The system is due to arrive Wednesday afternoon, March 5, according to the National Weather Service.
Heavy rain will fall in areas farthest north and inland that could cause major flooding as temperatures gradually rise in areas where deep snow from recent winter storms melts rapidly, AccuWeather meteorologists warn.
The area from northern New England and upstate New York to southern portions of Quebec and Ontario can experience quick meltdowns and flooding.
Cold air following a storm tracking mainly over Canada and northern New England this weekend will help preserve much of the snowpack into this week.
"The massive system will tap Gulf and Atlantic moisture in the form of drenching rain and pull warm air northward," says AccuWeather.
Ahead of the arrival of the storm, it will be mainly sunny and dry on Sunday, March 2, and Monday, March 3. (See the first image above.)
Temperatures will return to seasonable averages on Tuesday, March 4 and it will remain dry.

The storm will wind down from south to north starting Wednesday night and continuing into early Thursday morning, March 6.
