FIRES: GS Parkway Closed Near Shore, NJ Turnpike Threatened Near Meadowlands
UPDATE: A forest fire jumped the entire width of the Garden State Parkway from Lakewood into Brick Township while a Meadowlands brush fire stopped short of the New Jersey Turnpike amid Sunday's fierce winds. They were among no fewer than a half-dozen large brush fires -- and nearly just as many smaller blazes -- that raged at once throughout the Garden State on Sunday, whipped by winds reported at up to 40 miles an hour and low humidity that barely cracked 20%. Several New Jersey State Police troopers gathered on the Turnpike's western awaiting word whether to close the roadway as firefig…

He was the very definition of “class act,” a father figure and mentor to a multitude who made protecting others their mission. You couldn't help but love him. “Firefighting royalty” one colleague said Monday after learning that retired veteran fire chief and academy instructor Larry Rauch had died a week and a half shy of his 79th birthday. Rauch, the Bergen County Fire Academy’s head instructor for several decades, fought fires for nearly 50 years in Upper Saddle River. He lived there most of his life before moving to Manchester in 2019 with his beloved wife of 58 years, Sherry, who died…

A firefighter was hospitalized with an undisclosed injury, and the Passaic County prosecutor’s arson unit responded because of the size and amount of damage caused by the blaze, authorities said. In an eerie coincidence, the fire broke out…

: Hoarding Conditions Accelerate New Milford House Fire, Responders Say
UPDATE: Flames ravaged what responders said was a cluttered New Milford home Thursday night. A firefighter sustained a relatively minor injury in the three alarm fire, which began in the basement of the 2½-story Henley Avenue home at the corner of Asbury Street around 9:30 p.m., responders said. No other injuries were reported. Firefighters initially had trouble pinpointing the seat of the blaze because of hoarding conditions -- commonly called "Collyers mansion syndrome" after two wealthy Harlem brothers who died in a 1947 fire amid stacks of newspapers, books, tin cans and rotting trash.…

50 Years Later: Saddle Brook Fire Chief Who Made Ultimate Sacrifice Remembered
TRIBUTE: Thoughts and prayers Friday were with the family of a Saddle Brook fire chief who died in the line of duty 50 years ago. It was shortly after midnight June 26, 1970 that a West Caldwell driver’s car veered off the Garden State Parkway and plunged 30 feet onto Saddle River Road, bursting into flames. Fire Chief William “Don” Wilson was two blocks from the scene of the crash when he lost control of his own vehicle and it struck a tree on a notoriously treacherous curve on Saddle River Road. He was pronounced dead at what was then Hackensack Hospital about an hour later. Don Wilson …

: Couple From Englewood, Teaneck Save Saddle Brook Residents From Fire
Doorbells ringing in the middle of the night startled sleeping residents of a Saddle Brook neighborhood. What the sleepy-eyed homeowners found at 1:30 a.m. Saturday were two good Samaritans who'd been driving by and saw some trees on fire. Matthew Blackwell of Teaneck and Donnae Cushnie of Englewood, both 24, first dialed 911, then made sure residents in the Midland Avenue townhouse community were aware of the danger. Firefighters doused the flames before they could spread to the homes. "We were all in bed," resident Michael Sarao said. "If they hadn't seen it, or stopped, …
