The New York Yankees traded for Chicago Cubs pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. on Wednesday, July 31, sending infielder Ben Cowles and pitcher Jack Neely to the Windy City. The right-hander is the nephew of Al Leiter, a three-time World Series champion who pitched for the New York Mets and Yankees. The crowd at Yankee Stadium went silent and then erupted in cheers Wednesday when a cameraman who was hit square in the face with a misthrown ball raised his hand while being carted off. Pete Stendel of Long Branch, NJ, was in the camera well next to the Yankee dugout when the Baltimore Orioles tried to turn a double play off a ground ball by rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe in the fifth inning of the July 5 night game. A beloved New Jersey high school teacher and coach died after a lengthy battle to esophageal cancer. Curt D. Pakutka, 55, of Mansfield Township, died on June 7, at Hackettstown Medical Center. He was a well-loved physical education and driver's education teacher, as well as occasionally teaching health, at Newton High School in Sussex County. His love for sports followed him when he became a wrestling coach for Jefferson Township in Morris County from 2004-2015 and the head coach for the Newton High School Girls softball team from 2008-2019, according to his obituary. Baltimore Orioles pitcher Matt Harvey has been suspended for 60 games after admitting he gave oxycodone to Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, who died of a drug overdose, ESPN says citing the MLB. Harvey confessed during the Tuesday, May 17 federal trial of Eric Kay, who was convicted of providing the fentanyl that led to Skagg's death, the outlet said.
