The crash occurred shortly after midnight, Friday, March 11 in Howell, according to Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Lori Linskey.
None of the drivers' names had been released.
A 2004 Ford F150 pickup, driven by a man from Jackson, was traveling westbound on Route 33, just west of Colts Neck Road crossing the intersection, when it crossed the centerline and collided with a 2004 Kia Rio, sideswiping the vehicle, Linskey said.
The pickup then continued westbound, again in the eastbound lanes and collided in an offset head-on crash with a second vehicle, a 2010 Dodge Challenger, operated by a man from Neptune Township, the prosecutor said.
As a result of the second collision, the driver of the Challenger was pronounced dead at the scene, Linskey said.
The pickup overturned and the driver from Jackson was ejected from the vehicle. He is currently in critical condition at a local hospital, Linskey said.
The female driver of the Kia Rio was uninjured in the crash.
None of the drivers had passengers in their vehicles.
The crash remains under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Monmouth County SCART and Howell police.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information to assist the investigative team is urged to contact Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Agent Reginald Grant at 732-431-7160 ext. 8761, or Howell Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit Patrolman Kyle Bush at 732-938-4575, ext. 2667.
