NJ Native To Make MLB History As First Woman Umpire A New Jersey native will be the first woman to step behind home plate, calling balls and strikes in a Major League Baseball game. Jen Pawol is set to make history as the first woman to umpire a regular-season MLB game, the league announced on Wednesday, Aug. 6. The West Milford, NJ, native will work three games when the Miami Marlins play at the Atlanta Braves. The Marlins and Braves will have a doubleheader on Saturday, Aug. 9, creating the need for a fifth umpire in the weekend series. Pennsauken Funeral Attendant, 72, Dies, Remembered As Devoted Family Fan, Animal Lover George Peirce, a 72-year-old Pennsauken resident, died on Saturday, July 5, according to his obituary from the Falco/Caruso & Leonard Pennsauken Funeral Home website, where he previously worked as an attendant. Peirce was a lifelong Pennsauken resident, graduating from Pennsauken High School in 1970, his obituary reads. He worked as a corrections officer at Riverfront State Prison in Camden for over 20 years and then worked as a part-time funeral attendant at Falco/Caruso and Leonard Funeral Home, according to his obituary. Pakutka, 55, of Mansfield Township, died on June 7, at Hackettstown Medical Center. He was a well-loved physical education and driver's education teacher, as well as occasionally teaching health, at Newton High School in Sussex County. Central Jersey Native, Beloved Dad Dies Suddenly, 38 Central Jersey native and beloved father Douglas Maurice Verschelde died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 19. He was 38. Verschelde grew up in Medford before moving to Point Pleasant, where he lived at the time of his death, his obituary says. A member of Five Alive Bassmasters, Verschelde loved fishing and working on his boat. Verschelde was also an avid softball player and Scudz Sports teammate, his memorial says.
