Thousands of casino-hotel workers in Atlantic City supported a strike in a vote, according to their union. The vote by members of Local 54 of the Unite Here union leaves exact logistics for a strike up to its contract negotiation team. They voted on Wednesday, June 15. Casino Hotel Workers Seek 'Significant' Pay Hikes In Atlantic City Contract, Union Says
More than 10,000 casino-hotel workers in Atlantic City are seeking significant pay hikes upon the expiration of their contracts on May 31, according to their union. "We haven't even started bargaining with the companies," said Bethany Holmes, a spokeswoman for Local 54 of Unite Here, the main union representing workers at nine Atlantic City casinos. The long-awaited implosion of the Trump Plaza Casino is on hold for another month. Atlantic City officials announced the delay at a Thursday news conference. Named after former President Trump, the 30 year old hotel casino is the Republican's last major business tie to South Jersey. Coronavirus spelled bad luck for Atlantic City's casinos. Closed by the COVID-19 epidemic on March 16, the Garden State's gambling hub took in about 69 percent less money in April 2020 than last April -- bolstered only by a more than doubling in internet betting proceeds. All totaled, casino revenue fell by nearly $200 million last month from a year ago.
