Philly Area Gravestone Salesman Scammed Mourners Out Of $1.5 Million, Feds Say
The owner of a headstone company is accused of ripping off hundreds of grieving customers across greater Philadelphia, federal prosecutors allege in an indictment. Gregory J. Stefan Jr., 54, of Upper Merion, is charged with seven counts of wire fraud, according to the US Attorney's Office. Between January 2018 and September of last year, Stefan accepted more than $1.5 million from customers who ordered memorials for loved ones, then failed to deliver the headstones they bought, authorities said. CASE: Philly Woman Found Strangled Off I-81 In Schuylkill County
Pennsylvania State Police continue to investigate the murder of Caryn Fortino. Fortino, 38, was found dead in a wooded area off of Interstate 81 in Delano Township on May 23, 2003. She had been strangled, according to troopers. Authorities said Fortino was from the Philadelphia area and was last in contact with loved ones that February. A 2003 report from the Allentown Morning Call said her last known address was in Egg Harbor, New Jersey, but that she had moved back to Philly before her death. 19-Year-Old Motorcyclist Killed In Atlantic County Crash
A 19-year-old man was killed in an Atlantic County motorcycle crash over the weekend, police said. Jeremiah Saint Surin, of Mays Landing, was heading east on West Jersey Avenue approaching Cates Road in Egg Harbor when he struck a Ford Explorer that entered the intersection around 6:15 p.m. Saturday, June 1, Egg Harbor police said. Saint Surin was hospitalized with serious injuries and pronounced dead by hospital personnel. The Ford driver, a 38-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries from the airbag deployment. Two women have been arrested in connection with the shooting of an 11-year-old boy struck by a stray bullet on Saturday night, May 25 in Atlantic City, police said. The National Weather Service has released rainfall totals from the weekend storm. Between Sunday morning, Dec. 10 and Monday morning, Dec. 11, the area that got the most amount of rain was Deerfield with 4.45 inches, then Flemington/Hopewell, with 4.29 inches. Franklin Lakes saw 4.09 inches, the NWS says. Flanders only got .13 inches, and Florham Park only had .38 inches of rain. Police ID 2 Found Dead In Atlantic County
Authorities have identified the bodies of two people found dead at a home in Atlantic County this weekend. Thai Tran, 28, and Viet Tran, 53, were found unresponsive in a home at 2909 Fire Road in Egg Harbor around 8:25 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said. Both were residents of the home and were pronounced dead by a nurse practitioner on scene. The South Regional Medical Examiner’s Office took possession of both individuals. Human remains discovered last month in Ocean County have been identified, authorities said. The remains discovered in Plumsted Towns have been positively identified as those of Joseph Izquierdo, 37, of Egg Harbor, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Tolls on the Atlantic City Expressway are going up next year, officials said on Thursday, Nov. 17. Starting Jan. 1, 2023, cash tolls on the 44-mile Expressway’s Egg Harbor and Route 50 toll plazas will increase from $4.40 to $4.55 for a passenger vehicle. Expressway tolls are going up by 3% from year to year, said Kimberly Testa, a spokeswoman with the South Jersey Transportation Authority. Matthew James Branning, 50, was last seen at his job in Silverdale Borough on Friday afternoon, Perkasie Borough police said. A 34-year-old motorcyclist died in a crash with a USPS mail truck Saturday in South Jersey, police said. Michael P. Giannetta Jr., of Galloway, was heading westbound on W.
