Nita Lowey, a powerful member of Congress for decades while representing parts of downstate New York, has died.
She was 87.
Lowey, who represented much of Westchester as well as Rockland County, died on Saturday, March 15 at her home in Harrison, her family announced, saying the cause of death was complications from metastatic breast cancer.
Lowey, a Democrat, served in Congress from 1989 until 2021 after deciding not to seek re-election.
