Lawrence Township Couple Admits To Lying On Asylum Applications For Sri Lankans, Feds Say A Lawrence Township couple admitted to submitting fraudulent asylum applications for clients from Sri Lanka, authorities said. Zuwairul Ameer, 61, and Claudette Ameer, 63, pleaded guilty on Monday, Aug. 26 to conspiracy to commit immigration fraud, New Jersey's U.S. Attorney Philip Sellinger said in a news release. They were indicted in the immigration fraud case on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2023. Daniel "Danny" Hass, a student at Notre Dame High School in Lawrence Township, died Saturday, Aug. 24, his family said in a post on social media. Body Recovered From Delaware & Raritan Canal In Mercer County First responders were pulling a body from the Delaware & Raritan Canal in Mercer County on Wednesday afternoon, July 3, authorities said. New Jersey State Park Police and the Trenton Fire Department’s Water Rescue Team were called to a part of the canal in Lawrence Township to recover the body, according to Caryn Shinske, a spokeswoman with the state Department of Environmental Protection. A medical examiner was en route to the scene at 2:15 p.m., she said.  Additional details weren’t immediately available.
