A man was rescued after his sailboat was caught in high winds and rough waters in a Monmouth County estuary, officials said. The Atlantic Highlands Fire Department received a report on Monday, Mar. 11 of a sailboat in distress in the Shrewsbury River, which flows into Sandy Hook Bay. In a Facebook post, Sea Bright Fire Rescue said its marine crew was asked to provide mutual aid to Atlantic Highlands firefighters. Winds were greater than 40 knots (about 46 miles per hour) and waves were more than four feet high. The windy weather knocked out power for more than 30,000 customers across N…

Body Of Missing NJ Boater Recovered From Sandy Hook Bay
The body of a New Jersey boater who went missing earlier this month has been recovered, authorities said. Richard O'Day, a 54-year-old father of three from Rumson, took his Grady White Freedom out from a private dock on Polly's Pond on May 1, according to Rumson police. It was the first time he'd had the 27-footer on the water since putting it into winter storage, family members said. The boat was found three days later in Sandy Hook Bay, anchored 1,000 feet from shore in Horseshoe Cove, said New Jersey State Police, whose Marine Unit conducted an intensive search along with the U.S. Coast…

Frozen, Dead Humpback Whale Washes Up On New Jersey Beach
A dead and frozen humpback whale measuring 32 feet and approximately 10 tons washed up on a New Jersey beach on Christmas Day. The male humpback whale first washed up dead in the surf in Loveladies, but the tide pulled the carcass back out, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center said. The carcass washed back out on Barnegat Light on Christmas Day. The same whale -- approximately three years old -- had been photographed alive earlier this year in Sandy Hook Bay during feeding. Imprints of teeth on the fluke of the dead whale's tail indicates a young orca's failed attempt to take it, the MM…

UPDATE: One of the most visited national parks in the nation will reopen a week later -- on Saturday, May 9, exactly a week after all of New Jersey's state parks and golf courses. Gateway National Recreation Area, a 27,000-acre federal park that includes Sandy Hook Beach in Monmouth County -- straddling New Jersey and New York -- has been closed since April 8 due to the coronavirus. Swimming and picnicking will remain prohibited, but beaches will reopen, federal officials said. Gov. Phil Murphy announced last Wednesday that all New Jersey parks would reopen at sunrise on May 2, and a…

Man Who Left Pit Bull Pup Caged In Water Off Sandy Hook Gets Year In Prison
A 36-year-old Long Branch man was sentenced to a year in state prison for leaving an 8-month-old pit bull mix locked in a cage in the rising tide of the Sandy Hook Bay, authorities said. Jurors in December convicted Aaron D. Davis of Long Branch of fourth-degree animal cruelty following a three-day trial before County Superior Court Judge Marc C. LeMieux in Freehold. The jurors acquitted him of attempting to kill the dog, who was rescued. As part of Friday's sentence, the judge ordered Davis to pay $731 restitution and to complete 156 hours of community service, the Monmouth County Pr…
