Feds Accuse South Jersey Jail Of Violating Addicted Inmates' Constitutional Rights
The federal government on Thursday accused officials who run the Cumberland County Jail of failing to prevent suicides and provide adequate mental health care to drug-addicted inmates suffering from withdrawal. “There is reasonable cause to believe that the facility failed to screen for or provide adequate mental health treatment to inmates at risk of self-harm and suicide, in violation of the Eighth and 14th Amendments of the Constitution,” the U.S. Department of Justice said in a release. “Inmates faced a heightened risk of self-harm and suicide due to the jail’s failure to provide medica…

The borough also will pay Valley Chabad $1.5 million in damages and attorney’s fees resulting from the ordeal, under a separate agreement between th…

The U.S. Justice Department took the case because Centanni -- who is married and lives in West Mountainside -- receives roughly $102,000 a month in Section 8…

Feds: Staff At NJ Women's Prison Sexually Abused Inmates
Staff members at a New Jersey prison for women sexually abused inmates, federal prosecutors said Monday. Evidence shows that the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in Clinton "fails to protect prisoners from sexual abuse by the facility’s staff," U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said Monday. This violates the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, Carpenito said. The U.S. Justice Department served notice on the Hunterdon County facility "for these alleged conditions and the minimum remedial measures necessary to address them," he said. In turn, Carpenito said, state official…
