Joseph Luistro, Edison's First Asian American Police Officer, Dies At 55
Retired Edison Police Sergeant Joseph Vincent Luistro died on Thursday, Jan. 18 of Lou Gehrig's disease, according to Edison Township police. He was 55 years old. Luistro was a 27-year veteran of the police force and was the first Asian American to serve in the Edison Police Department. Luistro started his law enforcement career in 1993 at Rutgers University-New Brunswick Police Department. He transferred to the Edison Police Department in 1999. A 53-year-old bus driver from Edison has been charged with neglect after authorities said she left a disabled woman in a van overnight. Winnie Raini has been suspended from her job with Inspiring NJ Transportation LLC following the incident on Jan. 2, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Edison Poilce Chief Thomas Bryan said. Edison Woman Seriously Injured After Struck By Speeding Car Sees Community Support
Suchrita Kamath has a long road to recovery. The Edison woman was seriously injured after she was struck by a speeding car at a crosswalk on Saturday, Dec. 23. Kamath sustained a skull fracture, spinal fracture, internal bleeding, pelvic fracture, multiple collar bone fractures and other severe internal injuries and was unconscious for five days. The National Weather Service has released rainfall totals from the weekend storm. Between Sunday morning, Dec. 10 and Monday morning, Dec. 11, the area that got the most amount of rain was Deerfield with 4.45 inches, then Flemington/Hopewell, with 4.29 inches. Franklin Lakes saw 4.09 inches, the NWS says. Flanders only got .13 inches, and Florham Park only had .38 inches of rain. Disturbing details are coming to light following the arrest of a 55-year-old Edison teacher accused of a years-long sexual relationship with a student, police paperwork shows. The crash occurred at about 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13 at Parsonage Road, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation. Menlo Park Diner Shuttered By Fire In Kitchen: FD
A popular diner in Edison has been closed by a kitchen fire, authorities said. The fire at the Menlo Park Diner, 1475 Route 1, broke out on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 9:58 p.m., according to Edison Fire Chief Andrew Toth. "It was more smoke than anything," said Toth who noted there were no injuries. The restaurant had closed for the day at 3 p.m., the chief said. The fire was extinguished in 15 to 20 minutes, he said. The exact cause was undetermined and under investigation by the Middlesex County Fire Marshal. “It will be shut down until they make repairs,” Toth said.

Failed Brakes Send School Bus Carrying Students Into Edison Home: Police
Two students suffered minor injuries after a school bus crashed into a home in Edison, authorities said. The brakes apparently failed on the bus carrying about 30 John Adams Middle School students at 8:06 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18,, Police Chief Thomas Bryan said. The driver, who was not hurt, did a great job maneuvering around three other houses by crossing through a field, the chief said. No one was injured in the home on Rahway Roa which was occupied by three clearing crew workers, Bryan said. The house has been condemned, he said. "It could have been a lot worse," Bryan said.
