Dad Struck, Killed Along Garden State Parkway 'Had A Heart To Help Those He Could' The community is rallying to support the family of a 55-year-old man who was struck and killed after his car broke down along the Garden State Parkway. Robert Piel Sr. of Bayonne "had a heart to help those he could," according to a GoFundMe set up to pay funeral costs. Piel was standing in the left lane of the parkway after his Ford stopped in the center lane on Oct. 14 in Sayreville, according to New Jersey State Police. At 7:03 p.m., police responded to the 600 block of Willow Grove Street to a report of a teen bicyclist struck by a deer, officers said.  Police determined the deer ran into the roadway and was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound, officers said. The deer then proceeded to hit the bicyclist, police said. The bicyclist suffered minor injuries and the bicycle was damaged, police said. Crash Partially Closes I-78 In Somerset County A crash partially closed Interstate 78 in Somerset County, authorities said. New Jersey State troopers responded at 10:41 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5 to a crash on Interstate 78 west at milepost 27, in Bedminster, a State Police spokesman said. Based on a preliminary investigation two vehicles were traveling west when one vehicle lost directional control striking the other vehicle, he said. There were no injuries reported. One left lane of three lanes was closed, 511nj.org reported.
