Edgar Diaz of Manchester previously pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter in Margarita Diaz's death last August, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said.
On Aug. 7, 2019, Toms River police were called to Deer Chase Professional Park for reports of an assault. Police arrived found an unresponsive female. Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders, the victim was pronounced dead at Community Medical Center, police said.
Subsequent investigation found that Diaz attacked his mother during an argument, stabbed her with a knife and slammed her head into the pavement near their parked vehicle, the prosecutor said.
Diaz must serve at least 85 percent of his 18-year sentence in state prison before he may be considered for parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act, Billhimer said.
Diaz pleaded guilty on Jan. 17, as reported here by Daily Voice.
He has been lodged in the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center since his arrest on Aug. 13, 2019.
