Nancy Proctor, 62, of Ortley Beach, was charged on Monday with theft by unlawful taking, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer and Plumsted Township Police Chief Earl Meroney.

An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Economic Crime Unit and Plumsted Township Police Department found that Proctor -- a former manager at Laurita Winery in New Egypt -- stole more than $40,000 from the winery between Jan. 24, 2019 and Nov. 1, 2019, Billhimer and Meroney said.

Proctor was responsible for collecting payments from food vendors for events taking place at Laurita Winery, but instead diverted the monies intended for Laurita Winery to her own personal PayPal accounts, for her own personal benefit, the prosecutor said.

Proctor was taken to the Seaside Heights Police Department, where she was processed and released on a summons pending a future court date, Billhimer and Meroney said.
