The agency confirmed the incident shortly after it occurred right after midnight Sunday morning, March 9, noting that President Donald Trump was not at the White House at the time. Trump is spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
The man, who has been identified as Andrew Dawson, whose last known address is North Manchester, Indiana, was transported to a hospital with critical injuries, according to The Washington Post.
No Secret Service personnel were injured during the event.
On Saturday evening, the Secret Service said it obtained information from local authorities in Indiana about a suicidal man who might be traveling to Washington, DC.
Members of the Secret Service then found the man's vehicle near 17th and F streets NW around midnight Sunday.
The law enforcement bulletin said Dawson wanted to die by “suicide by cop” and was armed with a BB gun, according to The New York Times.
As officers approached him, the man brandished a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by multiple agencies, according to authorities.
The investigation into the shooting is being handled by the DC Metropolitan Police’s Internal Affairs Division Force Investigations Team, which is responsible for officer-involved incidents in the District of Columbia.
