David Neufield, of Berkeley Heights, was found inside of the vehicle that had struck the memorial for NJSP Trooper Thomas Hanratty at milepost 46.8 in Summit around 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, State Police said. Worker Hit In Head By Backhoe, Killed While Demolishing Home: Scotch Plains PD A man died after he was struck with the bucket of a backhoe while demolishing a home in Scotch Plains on the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 12, authorities said. Officers responded to the scene at 3:30 p.m. and located the victim who had severe head trauma, Scotch Plains police said in a release. At 3:27 p.m., a woman reported a man, later identified as Rene Gustavo Hernandez broke a portion of her fence before attempting to gain entry to her locked 2019 Subaru Forester parked outside her residence, Summit police said in a release. At 11:53 a.m. officers responded to a report of two vehicles stolen from a residence on Llewellyn Road that were taken overnight, Summit Police said in a release. Two suspects entered the residence through an unlocked first floor front window before proceeding to the kitchen, where they removed three key fobs while the family slept upstairs, police said. At 12:45 p.m., the woman was crossing the alleyway at the entrance to the Tier Garage at 426 Springfield Ave. when she was struck by a 2021 Jeep Cherokee driven by an 85-year-old man who was traveling east on Springfield Avenue and turned right into the alleyway leading to the garage, Summit police said in a release. North Jersey Officer Suffers Partial Blindness, Paralysis After Brain Surgery, Campaign Says Brian Werthmann is in the fight for his life and the community is coming together to help. Werthmann, a sergeant in the Summit Police Department, recently underwent an 8-hour surgery to remove a large acoustic neuroma from his brain.  While surgeons were able to successfully remove the tumor from his brain, Werthmann has experienced complications including paralysis on the left side of his body, partial blindness and the inability to walk without assistance.
