The collapse of an abandoned mineshaft caused the massive sinkhole on Route 80 in Morris County, authorities said on Friday, Dec. 27. Route 80 eastbound remains closed after the 40-foot by 40-foot sinkhole appeared on the morning of Thursday, Dec. 26, the New Jersey Department of Transportation said. Crews have stabilized the area and began excavation work Thursday night in the right shoulder and right lane on I-80 eastbound, near mile post 34 in Wharton, the DOT said. Video Shows Van Explosion That Caused Gridlock On Main Morris County Roadway
Daily Voice has obtained footage of a van fire, including a minor explosion, that closed a Morris County intersection on Thursday, Dec. 5 (scroll for video). The incident occurred on Route 10 in Randolph near Denville, just past the Mount Pleasant Turnpike, and involved a painter’s van, according to Denville Police Capt. Scott Welsch. The van's driver had pulled over after noticing smoke and entered a nearby business to seek help, Welsch said. A passerby spotted the van in flames and called 911. Randolph Teen Fatally Struck By Vehicle: Prosecutor
An 18-year-old Randolph resident was fatally struck by a vehicle on the evening of Friday, Nov. 29, authorities said. Maria Lorena Orellana-Valverde was struck by a 2022 Honda HRV at the intersection of Route 10 and Cedar Grove Road, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office said. Orellana-Valverde was transported to Morristown Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries, authorities said. The incident remains under investigation, authorities said.

Officers Attacked After Trying To Detain Man At Red Carpet Inn: Hanover Township PD
Several Hanover Township police officers were injured after they tried to detain a man at a Red Carpet Inn on Friday, Aug. 16, authorities said. Three officers responded to the Red Carpet Inn on Route 10 to investigate reports of threats made from one motel guest to another, Hanover Township police said in a release. While questioning a suspect, officers observed a man light a cigarette in the hallway after being warned multiple times in the past he could not smoke inside the motel, police said. Baby Dies After Being Left In Car In Morris County: Prosecutor
Authorities in Morris County are investigating the death of a 6-month-old infant on Wednesday, July 17. Police were called to a parking lot near South Ridgedale Avenue at Route 10 in East Hanover around 1:30 p.m. where they found the baby girl in a parked vehicle, Morris County Prosecutor Robert Carroll said.
