Fire Breaks Out At New Jersey's Oldest Restaurant, Firefighters Say A 300-year-old restaurant in Morris County, billed as New Jersey's oldest, was hit with heavy smoke on the early morning of Monday, Sept. 2, authorities said. At 3:50 a.m., firefighters in Mendham responded to a fire alarm at the Black Horse Tavern and Pub, officials said. Upon arrival, firefighters faced a heavy smoke condition and struck a first alarm, requesting mutual aid, officials said. 300-Year-Old NJ Restaurant Closing For Renovations A New Jersey restaurant open for more than 300 years will temporarily close for renovations. The Black Horse Tavern & Pub, located on W. Main Street in Mendham, bills itself as the state's oldest continually running restaurant, dating back to 1742. Over the weekend, the eatery, which serves American classics, said it will be undergoing temporary closure for renovations. "Get ready for a brand-new kitchen and a fresh look!" the Facebook post reads. "We're excited to unveil these upgrades to you." Black Horse Tavern & Pub will hold a grand reopening in Fall 2024.
