Grand Jury: NJ Officer Justifiably Shot, Killed Knife-Wielding Man Who Stabbed Woman
A Newark man who’d just stabbed a woman was justifiably shot and killed by an Orange police officer after he charged at police with the knife, a grand jury found.
Jamahl Smith, 46, refused repeated commands by responding officers to drop the knife on the third floor of the Oakwood Towers on Oakwood Avenue around 3 p.m. June 13, 2019, Acting New Jersey Attorney General Andrew J. Bruck said Wednesday.
Instead, he “continued to advance toward the officers,” Bruck said.

Morris County Man, 37, Charged With Sexual Assault
A Morris County man has been charged with sexual assault in connection with a 2019 incident, authorities said.
Samuel Kennedy, 37, was processed April 16 on a second-degree charge following a “detailed and thorough” investigation into an assault that was originally reported Jan. 26, 2019, Hanover Police said.
Kennedy, of Morristown, was served at the Morris County Correctional Facility, where he was already being held on unrelated charges, police said.
He is scheduled to appear virtually before Judge Taylor on May 24, according to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.
FBI Sting: Ex-Paraguayan Lawmaker, Husband Admit Roles In $2 Million Drug Money Laundering Plot
A former member of Paraguay’s Congress thought that she and her husband were laundering $800,000 in drug money when they’d actually been caught in a New Jersey-based FBI sting, federal authorities said.
Cynthia Elizabeth Tarragó, 41, also promised the purported drug traffickers that she could get them large quantities of cocaine at a good price, they said.
