Romeo, 77, died on Saturday, Feb. 22, Bergenfield Mayor Emeritus Norman Schmelz said.
"I was able to work with him during my six years as mayor," Schmelz said. "He was a good neighbor."
Romeo, a Republican, had been serving as mayor since 1999 and his term was set to end in December 2027.
According to the New Jersey Globe, a special primary and general election will be held to fill Romeo's position. Three names will be submitted by the borough's Republican Party to serve as an interim successor, and then select one of them, the NJ Globe said.
Rep, Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., shared his condolences on Monday, Feb. 24.
"Very sad to learn about the passing of Cresskill Mayor Benedict Romeo," he said. "Mayor Romeo dedicated 26 years of service to the people of Cresskill and Jersey, and his leadership will be missed. My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time. May his memory be a blessing."
