In a TikTok video posted Tuesday, March 11, the 62-year-old comedian revealed that she officially moved to Ireland with her 12-year-old daughter, Dakota, in January on the heels of President Donald Trump's re-election.
In the nearly nine-minute clip, O’Donnell said she never imagined leaving the United States but ultimately felt it was the right decision for her and her daughter.
“It’s been pretty wonderful, I have to say,” she said of her new life in Dublin. “The people are so loving and so kind, so welcoming. And I’m very grateful.”
O’Donnell added that she is currently in the process of obtaining Irish citizenship since her grandparents were from the country.
While she admitted to missing her other children, friends, and many aspects of life in the US, she said she would only consider returning when she feels it is “safe for all citizens to have equal rights.”
"It's been heartbreaking to see what's happening politically and hard for me personally as well,” O’Donnell said. “The personal is political, as we all know."
O’Donnell’s move sparked a wave of reactions from fans. While some expressed sadness, others praised her for taking action.
One commenter wrote: “You’re so blessed you could leave.” O’Donnell responded: “Yes, so few can—I’m very aware.”
As she signed off, the former talk show host offered a message to her supporters:
“Protect your sanity is all I can say. Try not to swim in the chaos if possible, but I know it’s nearly impossible when you’re there in the middle of it.”
She added: “I think about everyone every day and the United States of America. And I am hoping that we can turn things around. Counting on you, all of you, to do what’s right.”
O'Donnell has been a vocal critic of Trump, having called him "the most dangerous man" and "the worst president we've ever had" on TikTok.
A Long Island native, O’Donnell was born and raised in Commack, where she attended Commack High School and was voted homecoming queen, prom queen, senior class president, and class clown.
She briefly attended Dickinson College in Pennsylvania and Boston University before dropping out to pursue stand-up comedy in the early 1980s.
O’Donnell rose to fame as a film and television actress, later becoming a household name with her nationally syndicated daytime talk show, The Rosie O’Donnell Show from 1996 to 2002.
A former Hudson Valley resident, O’Donnell previously owned multiple properties in South Nyack in Rockland County, before selling them in 2018. She also owns a home in West Palm Beach, Florida.
