: Help Sought Capturing Hit-And-Run Driver Who Killed Hawthorne Military Vet, 83
Authorities released the name and a photo of the accused hit-and-run driver who they said killed an 83-year-old Hawthorne man as he crossed the street near his home. Juan Martinez Gonzalez, who recently lived in Hawthorne, was behind the wheel of the Ford F-150 that struck Joe Bender as he crossed Wagaraw Road at Passaic Avenue -- near the Fair Lawn border -- shortly before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28, they said. : NJ Judge Frees Gun-Carrying Driver Who Rammed Police Cars With Stolen BMW, PD Says
A driver with no license, registration or insurance was carrying a gun when he rammed two Hawthorne police cars -- narrowly missing several officers -- with a BMW stolen from the Hamptons, authorities said. Troy Weeks, 27, was charged with five counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of both a firearm and a stolen vehicle and several other offenses following the incident, Hawthorne Detective Lt. Hawthorne Police Close Two Stores Violating Governor's Coronavirus Closure Order
Hawthorne police on Sunday closed two stores that they said were violating Gov. Phil Murphy's order that all non-essential businesses remain closed during the state's coronavirus state of emergency. A reported disturbance at the Jembro Store on Wagaraw Road brought police, who determined the incident was no more than a misunderstanding between a manager and employee with no action necessary. They did order the store, as well as another in the strip mall, Dave's Deals, immediately vacated and closed. No summonses were issued.
